Dailymotion Recommendation Tools Transparency Statement

Introduction

At Dailymotion, your experience is shaped by automated systems that suggest videos, topics, and channels based on a variety of signals. This page explains how these recommendation tools work, what factors matter most, and how you can influence your feed. This approach meets the standards set by the EU Digital Services Act (“DSA”) and reflects ongoing improvements and testing.

Our Values: An Algorithm Designed for Discovery and Diversity

Dailymotion’s recommendation system is guided by our core values:

  • Exploration, Not Isolation:
Our algorithm is designed to encourage exploration and broaden your horizons, not to trap you in repetitive loops or filter bubbles. Each recommendation is an invitation to discover new creators, viewpoints, and passions from around the world.
  • Diversity and Openness:
We believe every creator has a place on Dailymotion. No matter their background, topic, or community, we want to give a fair chance to all creators and users – including emerging ones – by highlighting new or lesser-known content and offering everyone the opportunity to discover a wide variety of videos. Our systems actively promote creative diversity, so you’re exposed to a rich palette of ideas and perspectives.
  • Creativity Over Performance:
On Dailymotion, authenticity matters more than perfection. We want creators to feel free to express themselves, not pressured to “game” an opaque algorithm. Your unique voice and perspective have value, regardless of your follower count or production style.
  • A Safe and Respectful Community:
We foster a positive, welcoming environment. Comments are moderated and we encourage meaningful exchanges while preventing toxic behaviors, so everyone can participate safely.
  • Putting You in Control:
You can take charge of your feed: personalize it, reset it, or adjust recommendation settings as you wish. Our goal is to offer you real choice and transparency.

How Our Recommendation Systems Work

We use several algorithms across different parts of our platform, such as your Home feeds (“For You” or “Explore”), suggestions after each video, and search results. Our systems are regularly improved and may include features that are in testing or beta phases.

Main Parameters

Our recommendation algorithms take into account:

  • Your Activity: Videos you watch, like, or share; channels you follow.
  • Content Information: Titles, descriptions, tags, transcripts, duration, format, uploader and AI-generated metadata.
  • Popularity and Reactions: Videos highlighted for positive engagement, such as meaningful comments and likes.
  • Recency: We favor recently published content, especially in the Explore and Home feeds.
  • Diversity and Discovery: We aim to promote a variety of viewpoints and help new or niche creators emerge, so your feed may include “hidden gems” and content that’s gaining traction in specific communities.

Apart for the language being used that will necessarily have an impact on the match rate of the results, the territory in which the videos have been posted is not taken into account to provide you a better opening to the world we live in.

Please note that while you’re typing your search, we might suggest you the end of your sentence based on the most popular searches made on the Dailymotion Service.

Some content may not be suitable for all audiences so we also make sure that videos which have a restricted access because they’ve been considered as sensitive content are not included in our recommendation systems.

We continually experiment with algorithmic approaches to ensure that new users (those without much watch history) see a fresh and diverse mix, with a strong emphasis on authentic, creator-driven content.

Examples of Recommender Logic

  • Home Feed (Apps):
Our feed highlights what’s trending and sparks conversation by showcasing popular videos and those with lots of interactions. We also give fair exposure to content from new creators, everyday users, and niche communities to offer you a diverse selection of videos. For personalization, the more you watch, the more your feed suggests content you might enjoy, whether it comes from channels you follow, matches your interests, comes from creators you tend to enjoy or is appreciated by like-minded viewers. Even when personalized, we do always make sure you are never in a bubble and keep exploring new subjects and opinions.
  • Video-to-Video Suggestions:
When you finish a video, the next set of recommendations considers your viewing history (if you’re logged in), channels you follow, and popular or topically related videos. It is also possible for some of our partners who embed our video player onto their properties to decide which videos of their catalog they automatically want to push in the queue after you’ve watched their video.
  • Search Results:
Our search uses a unified ranking system that considers both keyword relevance and recent popularity, and is being continuously optimized for consistency and relevance. You can decide to filter out search results by video, user, playlist, live, or hashtag.
  • Chapters and Thumbnails:
We can use AI to generate video chapters, select thumbnail images or simply better understand what a video is actually about. These features help make search, navigation, and discovery easier, and are being refined as we test their impact.

Your Control Over Recommendations

You can influence or reset your recommendations in several ways:

  • In the App:
Adjust your feed using a gauge (in beta) to indicate how interesting you find certain videos. You can also reset your feed in the Feed Settings section, wiping previous personalization to start fresh.
  • On the Website:
Use the privacy banner in the footer to manage cookies for recommendations. Deleting these cookies will reset your profile and recommendation history.
  • Opting Out:
Disabling cookies or resetting your feed means your recommendations will be less personalized, showing more general or trending content.

Where to Find These Controls

  • In-App Feed Settings: Profile > Feed Settings (to reset) or directly below a video by clicking the video recommendation suggested rate.
  • Website Privacy Banner: Footer > Privacy settings.

Ongoing Improvements

Our recommendation systems are regularly updated and may change as we test new features. We strive to increase transparency and relevance, and will update this page whenever significant changes are made.
